Feedback Posts, Explained
How to move course-related communication out of your email and onto CLASSUM.
At CLASSUM, we emphasize the benefits of open communication. It’s efficient and improves the learning experience by making information more widely available and inviting all course members to engage and interact. But open communication isn’t necessarily suited for every situation. Sometimes private interactions are necessary, which is where Feedback posts come into play.
Feedback posts provide a private space for communication between instructors and students and are automatically organized using the categories on CLASSUM. By taking full advantage of Feedback posts, you can keep all course communication in one place and avoid interactions being scattered across multiple channels.
Creating a Feedback Post
Navigate to your CLASSUM Forum and click Feedback.
Write a message about what students should use this post for (see below for a few suggestions).
Decide who should be able to see the ensuing private conversations (all course admin or only yourself).
Decide whether students should respond anonymously or with their real names.
Click Post.
Select a category for the post and click Confirm.
Chat privately with any students who respond.
Uses for Feedback Posts
To figure out the best uses for Feedback posts in your course, take a moment to look through your emails from last semester. What types of email do you get most frequently from students?
Creating Feedback posts for these topics will encourage students to use CLASSUM and help keep your course communication organized and easy to take care of. Make sure to create categories for different post topics so they’re easy to find and keep track of.
Here are a few suggestions to help you get started:
1. Feedback
As per their name, Feedback posts can be used to (surprise, surprise) receive feedback. Consider setting up a post at the beginning of your course asking students to share concerns or things they would like to see more of at any point.
If you’re looking for more specific feedback about a particular topic or aspect of the class, set up another post. Setting these posts to allow anonymous responses may also help students feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts.
2. Scheduling
Have you ever scheduled an exam near a religious holiday and been bombarded with emails about makeup tests? Avoid those emails by creating a Feedback post for makeup exam scheduling.
If you often meet individually with students in your course, consider using Feedback posts to arrange meetings and keep all of your scheduling conversations in the same place.
3. Personal Concerns
We recommend creating a real name Feedback post at the beginning of your course where students can express any personal concerns, such as special circumstances or unexpected challenges, that they may want to discuss with you.
4. Trouble-shooting during online exams
When it comes time for students to take online exams, set up a Feedback post on CLASSUM and make sure to stay available so you can respond to any technical difficulties. Easily chat with students in real time and keep track of multiple conversations with all of your messages organized in the same post.
5. Submitting Assignments
Use Feedback posts to collect assignments or privately share and receive files. Easily download everything at once with the “All Attachments” button in the top right.
6. Miscellaneous
Set up an extra Feedback post at the beginning of your course for students to send private messages that don’t fall into the categories of your other posts. This way, you can make sure all course communication stays organized on CLASSUM and students don’t feel the need to resort to email or other messengers.
Happy Posting!
