Education meets the Metaverse.

Currently, CLASSUM is interested in exploring changes in the Edtech industry. CLASSUM carefully analyzed and selected five trending keywords — the second of which is the Metaverse. The Metaverse has been trending in the global market.

The Metaverse has incredible future potential. PwC reports that the market value of the Metaverse is increasing rapidly, amounting to 9.5 billion dollars in 2020 and predicted to reach 1.5 trillion dollars by 2030. South Korea has become a forerunner in the Metaverse investments in the trending market.

What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is a modernized world expressed through digital content. In 1992, the Metaverse appeared in an SF narrative by Nell Stevenson; meta represents virtual reality, and verse is universe shortened. The characters become avatars in a virtual world called the Metaverse in the narrative. The Metaverse has come to define a new world represented through digital means — a digitalized world. Through advancements in technology, the Metaverse has become a platform that bridges reality with the virtual world and expands and interacts with users to induce activity.

Popular Metaverse platforms include Gather, a two-dimensional virtual space commonly used in corporations and schools that supports video conferences and character customization. Additionally, Facebook has rebranded itself as Meta, aiming to build 3D workrooms and virtual offices. Other examples include Roblox, a game played by half of all American children under 16; and Naver’s Zepeto, a Metaverse platform with the most Korean users. The metaverse includes a variety of technologies, and the four representative types of technology are as follows.

How can the Metaverse be Used in Education?

The pandemic has brought to light the limitations of current online learning platforms. To keep up with prolonged online education, recent developments in the education industry have been characterized by investments into the Metaverse. According to a local institute, the Metaverse has already become the center of attention for the younger generation. Because Millennials have naturally adapted to using digital platforms, it would not be challenging to integrate the Metaverse into education and students’ daily lives. By overcoming the limitations of online education, students can benefit from the Metaverse to make cognitive and social developments. The Metaverse encourages active participation, fueled by the modern digital experience, resulting in a more efficient learning environment.

It is possible to integrate Gather into CLASSUM. You can access the designated Gathertown with just one click in the CLASSUM space. This overcomes the limited communication of Zoom and offers a mixed-reality, communication-heavy learning experience.
